The parents' visit!
My parents arrived for a visit in March. They first went to visit Machu Picchu. My dad was sick the first day in Peru, my mom the 3rd day in Peru. But they are both troopers and managed to see everything. I met them at their hotel when they returned from Machu Picchu. My mom was still really sick, so my dad and went to eat at Sumaq Misky. It is a restaurant I really like, but only eat there occasionally...it is out of my budget, right Keri? We walked around a bit and I showed my dad some of the sights. I bought a tshirt with a Inkan llama spitting on a spanish horse. People here still hold a grudge against the Spanish. They say they speak castellano insteand of espanol, even though they dont actually speak that dialect. The next day, we left Cusco with Made and our driver Henry in a 4 wheel drive truck to Wayqichas. It was nice to show my parents my area of Cusco, which few people know...most travel on to Manu. We stopped in Paucartambo, and my parents had the pleasure of using the hole in the ground bathroom...literally. Then we continued travelling and arrived at Wayqichas. The guys were waiting for a truck to arrive, so we went up and took my parents on a mini tour. I got to show them some orchids and my plots. They got a view...and better luck, it didnt rain on us. We had chicken soup for supper, and nice talks.
The next morning, we went for another walk while Made went on a moto to Paucartambo to complain to ACCA. They were trying to take over my room, so we got them to take the beds for the arriving construction workers. And they left me my room after Made argued with Claudia for a while. It will not be fun to return to Wayqichas with 30 construction workers there, I am used to only 5 or so people there. But I got to show my parents the log bridge that I have to cross to reach more plots, they declined to cross it. It is literally three logs, spreading apart at the end. The middle long is also rotten. After a fried chicken lunch, we headed in the truck down the road to Manu Cloud Forest Lodge. It is right on the edge of a river between two mountains, with a few waterfalls. It is gorgeous. Each room has a balcony that looks right out onto the water, so we could hear the water at night. We went for a walk, and then were served a 4 course dinner which was leagues above the food at Wayqichas. When I found out there was hot water, I was in heaven. There was no one else there, so we had the run of the place ourselves. The next day, we went for another walk to see the famed Cock of the Rock. Well, actually it was raining, so Henry drove us down and we walked back. But we did get to see a few, from a little ways away. Thanks for bringing the binoculars, Dad. They are mostly orange, with an elvis like hairdo. The next day, 7 more hours in the car to return to Cusco. That night, I brought Manuela to meet my parents. She is the lady who runs our hotel and basically takes care of us when we are in Cusco. We took my parents shopping and watched my dad actually willingly spend some money. We had a great time at dinner, with lots of laughs. It was great to see them, and it was interesting. I wasn't homesick like I thought I might be on seeing them. I think I am just too busy and having too much fun to be homesick.
