Fun in the Field

Andrew and I made it safely to Peru, after a very long flight from Atlanta and very little sleep the night before due to packing. Andrew is a friend of mine from college who bravely volunteered to come spend the summer with me, helping me with my work. We spent another night with little sleep, catching up with John in Lima, and then flew to Cusco, where we had to rest and sleep. I took Andrew for his first chicken sandwich at Norton's which he loves.
The next morning, we got up and took the bus to Esperanza. Not a fun trip for Andrew. He happens to be about 6'5 and just barely fits into this mini seats. His knees dig into the back of the seat in front of him. Every Peruvian just doesnt get the fact that they cannot lean their seat back, his knees will not move. So he has to deal with them constantly trying to force the seat back, and not suceeding. And because he doesnt fit into his seat, he takes over a bit of my seat, so I am slightly uncomfortable. But I would gladly choose being uncomfortable over being in pain.
We arrived to find another group there...which made for a lack of mattresses. ACCA, of course, was on top of the ball (meaning not at all). The solution to the lack of mattresses was to take them from the workers and make them share beds. So for two nights Andrew had to sleep on one of our flimsy air mattresses on the wooden floor. Of course...the second night was because they forgot to get us the second mattress. Thanks to ACCA, for being horribly organized!
We did our research with no major accidents (I did fall off of the trail once, but managed to catch myself with my elbows...and no one saw). Martin was wonderful in helping us like always. I do not know what I would do without him.
We left Wayqichas at 12 at night, like normal. We had to run to catch the bus...because the bus forgot to honk on the other side of the river. Running up hill at 3000m is very hard, especially with bags. My lungs burned for a half an hour afterwards. But we made it to Cusco, ready to make our journey to Bolivia.
